Dan Williams and Jeff Kazel with the American Red Cross joined FOX21 in-studio to preview upcoming happenings around Veteran’s Day.
Here’s a rundown of the work that the Red Cross will be doing within the community:
- On Monday, November 7th, the Red Cross is teaming up with the UMD men’s and women’s hockey teams to write out cards of thanks to local service members and Veterans. This is an ongoing tradition for UMD Athletics and the Red Cross, but the first time they’ve have been able to do it since pre-COVID 2019.
- On November 10th and 11th, the Red Cross will be holding a large community blood drive at the Duluth Depot, sponsored by UMD Athletics and Affinity Plus Credit Union.
- On November 11th, Caribou is bringing up their cool ‘Bou truck to the Depot, and will have free beverages at the blood drive for all blood donors, as well as service members and Veterans.
- For the November 11th UMD men’s hockey ‘Military Appreciation’ game, we are partnering with the 148th Fighter Wing (with game-day volunteers and financial support from Enbridge) to have 150 men and women from the 148th – and their families – who deployed this past year as honored guests to the game. There will be a video played on the big screens, with what we anticipate will be a massive standing ovation to follow.
- On November 12th, the Red cross will be teaming up with UMD Athletics to honor John Paulick, a 72 year old Veteran (also known as the City of Duluth employee who cared for the Rose Garden for over 20 years) who also plays hockey for the Minnesota Warriors, a team made up of Veterans with disabilities.
